Tax Equity in Saskatchewan?

Update:

Nice Op-Ed from the Globe on NS. Flat tax and Maine’s move to adoption.  By Charles Cirtwill.

From the Article:

“there are lessons about communicating such fundamental reforms that New Brunswick Liberals could learn from Maine Democrats. When faced with the accusation that he has simply delivered “tax cuts for the rich,” Mr. Baldacci’s response is two-pronged: “Without employers, there are no employees,” and “The best social-services program is a job.” Words to live by.”

It appears that Saskatchewan is looking at moving to a 10% flax income tax rate, moving towards tax equity and ensuring competitiveness with other provinces which have similar incentives.

This is one of the most positive long term  economic moves the SaskParty has made yet; to ensure tax fairness and competitiveness, while reducing leakage to lower taxed jurisdictions.

The budget consultations over a year ago the government was looking for input on the budget and surplus allocation.  Flat the tax rates (other than required infrastructure and debt repayment) was my primary suggestion.  I look forward seeing where this goes and hope it can be phased in, depending on fiscal capacity.

I’ll probably weigh in more later, as more details come to light…..
